In 2007, Pocahontas Press decided to join the 21st century — better seven years late than never. We started our own website here, posted our books on amazon.com, and even started our own blog at www.pocahontaspress.blogspot.com after we figured out what a “blog” was. But for all the glitz and glamour of the internet, we still believe that books made of paper and ink are relevant and needed, so this year, in our traditional publisher mode, we started a new line of children’s books and published several state-of-the-art books that deserve adult attention. We think so highly of one, Fighting to Protect the Highlands, that we have nominated it for the 2008 Robert F. Kennedy Book Award. This award goes to the book which “most faithfully and forcefully reflects Robert Kennedy’s purposes — his concern for the poor and the powerless, his struggle for honest and even-handed justice, his conviction that a decent society must assure all young people a fair chance, and his faith that a free democracy can act to remedy disparities of power and opportunity.” "Fighting" documents the legal and political struggles of the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy, a small group of citizens that undertook to preserve areas of West Virginia that otherwise would have been lost to mining and development. They have not always prevailed, but they often succeeded, and all Americans are the beneficiaries. For all the soccer and football fans out there, the Virginia Sports Turf Management Association has published a guide to management of the fields the players use, everything from the kinds of grasses to plant to how to mow, water, fertilize, and control insects and weeds. Two of our new authors, Judy and Norman, provide meditations on their lives that offer insight for ordinary people, one of our founding purposes as a publisher. We published books from two Radford University professors — a book of autobiographical poetry by Paula Stanley, and a reflection on art and spirituality by Dr. Halide Salam that includes twenty pages of full-color artwork. Christiansburg, Virginia Councilman Steve Huppert has pieced together a biographical and instructional book on the world’s first stand-up comedian, Will Rogers; and a stunning reprint of Claude Clayton Smith’s 1984 novel, The Stratford Devil, now graces our catalogue. We hope you like to read, because we like to publish! Be sure to browse our
selection of books as well as peruse our blog. Feel free to send us your
thoughts and comments. We’d love to hear from you! |
