Road to Glory
Volume 1: The Willis White Era of the Salem High School Football Program
by Derek Sower |
- Salem High School football has become an icon for the
city. In its decades-long history, Salem football has seen
hundreds of victories, more than a dozen district titles,
and six state championships. Salem High School's success
began in 1983 with new head coach Willis White,
who became the coach of a team that had not experienced a
winning season since 1977. Road to Glory documents
the problems facing White upon his entrance into the
program, his recruiting coaching staff, and his winning not
only Salem High's first state title but three more state
titles. Eleven short chapters document the history of the
program during White's
tenure, and the lengthy Appendix gives statistics from 1977
through 1996.

- Quotes:
- "Sitting on a bench in the locker room, you gaze out to a room full of
your silent teammates watching last week's films. With a flip of the
switch, Coach turns the lights on and you slowly take your place in
line at the back of the room. Here you wait to receive your jersey and
pants. It is the same jersey as those who came before you wore. They had
seen state wins, district titles, and defeats." (page 1)
- "...White established continuity in the program and Magenbauer is
continuing it. Bradley is still coaching the same as he did before, but
it's the players that make the program. The City of Salem has a
philosophy of 'kids first.'" (page 31)
